Must Haves For New Parents

Today’s post has been long overdue and some readers have indicated multiple times that they would like to get some tips for new parents on what should be on their shopping list. First, I would say that this is not an exhaustive list and I will probably put together a downloadable spreadsheet once I think I have made this list more complete.

Secondly, this list is currently what I believe to be the most important things you will need from the day that your baby is born. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get all this ready. Anyway, now for my top tips.

Nursery

The most important things you will need are:

  • a cot with a high quality mattress
  • a baby changing station with storage for diapers and wipes, etc.
  • a second small lightweight crib to conveniently let you baby rest anywhere ein the house.

These really are essentials and are not only designed for your convenience. You will save yourself agony through bad posture during diaper changing and your baby will sleep so much more comfortably.

Clothing

You will need a lot of baby clothing and do yourself a favor and avoid the branded products. Yes it’s nice to have a few going out outfits but by and large you will find that all the clothing is constantly messed up with all sorts of things that babies are good at (no need for details here).

No matter where you go, always make sure you have a full change of clothes with you including vests and socks. The last thing you want to have happen is being somewhere with baby covered in puke and no way to clean things up.

Stroller

You should really not take this decision lightly. Buying the wrong baby stroller can cost you dearly once you get to the stage where you need to replace it. There are many different types and really is down to a personal preference. For the sporty types there are jogging strollers which will allow you to go for a run with your baby (can be very convenient).

Check out some of these great value double strollers if you already have a baby or toddler and will need to account for more than one seat. Even if your toddler is already walking, the last thing you want face is carrying one child while pushing the other.

Gadgets

This usually excites the dad’s most but there really isn’t much that is really exciting. The most high tech device you can get is probably the baby monitor and I would strongly advise on getting one with camera and/or built in apnea-alarm that monitors your baby’s breathing. This will give you a lot of peace of mind especially if this is your first baby.

One area to do a lot of research is on the car safety seat. Do not try and save money here as you really want to get something that is extremely safe and comfortable. If you spend any length of time in a car you really need to make a good investment here.

There are also lots of add-ons you can get for your car and stroller, ranging from mirrors to toys and simple cup holders. You will very quickly find out that two hands are not enough, so having convenient holders and bags will make your life easier.
